A Healing Checklist: 5 Essentials for Post-Treatment Skin Health

A “Healing Checklist” – clarifying why certain steps in your aftercare plan are so important and how the steps and products all work together.

After a great aesthetic treatment—like microneedling, peels, or lasers—the big question is how to care for your skin for optimal results. A recent webinar with Dr. Chris Croley (Skin & Tonic) outlined five key components of effective recovery. His “Healing Checklist” offers a clear, empowering framework to understand why each aftercare step matters and how they work together to maximize your outcome.

Below, is Dr. Croley’s Healing Checklist—five essential pillars of post-treatment care that can elevate your recovery and help you make the most of your glow-up.

A “Healing Checklist” – is super helpful. It clarifies why certain steps in your aftercare plan are so important and how the steps and products all work together.

The List:

ESSENTIAL #1: MINIMIZE INFLAMMATION

Right after a procedure, your skin has undergone a controlled injury – that’s how many treatments stimulate renewal! This naturally triggers skin inflammation. While a little inflammation is part of healing, too much or prolonged inflammation can lead to discomfort, swelling, prolonged redness, and increase the risk of complications like Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) (click here for post), those super dark spots we want to avoid. Calming things down quickly is the first essential step.

WHY IT’S CRUCIAL: Reducing immediate inflammation helps manage discomfort, minimizes downtime, and sets the stage for smoother healing with fewer potential side effects like PIH.

How it’s done:

  • Following specific post-procedure cooling instructions from your provider (I love spoons straight out of the freezer!)
  • Using gentle cleansers and avoiding harsh scrubbing.
  • Applying products with known soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients (aloe, specific peptides, or other calming agents).
  • Avoiding activities that cause excessive heat or sweating initially (intense workouts or saunas).
ESSENTIAL #2: HYDRATE DEEPLY

Properly hydrated skin is happy, functioning skin! When your skin is healing, it needs adequate moisture for all sorts of cellular processes to work efficiently – think enzyme function, cell communication, and nutrient transport. Dehydration can significantly slow down healing and make your skin feel tight and uncomfortable. Ensuring deep hydration is vital.

WHY IT’S CRUCIAL: Optimal hydration supports efficient cell turnover, improves the skin’s flexibility, reduces feelings of tightness, and helps create the ideal environment for repair enzymes to do their job.

How it’s done:

  • Using recommended post-procedure serums and moisturizers containing humectants to draw moisture in.
  • Avoiding products with drying alcohols immediately after treatment.
  • Drinking plenty of water – internal hydration supports skin health too!
  • Using lukewarm, not hot, water for cleansing.
ESSENTIAL #3: RESTORE THE SKIN BARRIER QUICKLY

Think of your skin barrier (the outermost layer, or stratum corneum) as a protective wall. It keeps the good stuff (like moisture) in and the bad stuff (like irritants and bacteria) out. Aesthetic procedures often temporarily compromise this barrier, making your skin more vulnerable. Getting that wall rebuilt quickly is absolutely essential!

WHY IT’S CRUCIAL: A healthy barrier prevents excessive water loss (Transepidermal Water Loss – TEWL), protects underlying layers from irritation and infection, and helps skin feel comfortable and less sensitive during recovery. The faster it’s restored, the better protected your skin is.

How it’s done:

  • Using moisturizers specifically formulated with barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.
  • Being extremely gentle – no harsh rubbing or exfoliation.
  • Avoiding potential irritants found in some fragrances, essential oils, or harsh preservatives while the barrier is compromised.
  • Protecting the skin from friction (e.g., rough towels or clothing).
  • Do NOT pick at peeling skin!
🌠 Plasma treatments have a distinct advantage over other treatments in that they do not remove the protective skin barrier – this reduces overall risk and speeds up the healing process. 🌠
ESSENTIAL #4: STIMULATE REPAIR

Many aesthetic treatments work by kick-starting your skin’s natural repair processes, particularly the production of collagen and elastin – the proteins that give skin its firmness and bounce. While the procedure provides the initial signal, your aftercare can provide the building blocks and support needed for optimal regeneration. Supporting this repair phase is key.

WHY IT’S CRUCIAL: Supporting this phase helps maximize the collagen-boosting, texture-improving results you sought from the procedure in the first place.

How it’s done:

  • Using targeted ingredients (as directed) like growth factors or peptides to support healing and regeneration.
  • Ensuring adequate protein intake in your diet, as collagen is a protein.
  • Getting enough rest – your body does major repair work while you sleep!
  • Reintroducing actives like retinoids or Vitamin C per your provider’s timeline to support long-term collagen and repair.
ESSENTIAL #5: PROTECT FROM ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSES

This final essential is non-negotiable. Healing skin is delicate and much more susceptible to damage from the environment, especially the sun! UV radiation is inflammatory, it degrades collagen, and it’s a major trigger for PIH. Even on cloudy days here in Calgary, or through windows, UV rays are present and can impact your results.

WHY IT’S CRUCIAL: Protection prevents UV-induced setbacks like hyperpigmentation, ensures the newly formed collagen isn’t immediately damaged, and generally supports a smoother, faster healing process.

How it’s done:

  • Daily SPF 30+ (ideally 50+) is essential—mineral formulas are gentler post-procedure. Wear even if indoors and reapply every 2 hours outdoors.
  • Protective Clothing & Accessories—wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses provides an extra physical barrier.
  • Seeking Shade —Especially during peak sun hours (usually 10 am to 4 pm), try to limit direct sun exposure.
  • Antioxidant Serums—provider directed incorporation of antioxidants (like Vitamin C) can help neutralize some free radical damage from environmental exposure.

Putting it All Together

You’ll notice that many high-quality post-procedure products are actually formulated to tackle several of these essentials at once! A good recovery serum might hydrate, contain anti-inflammatories, and include peptides to stimulate repair. This synergistic approach is why following the specific regimen recommended by your provider is so important – it’s designed to provide comprehensive support tailored to the procedure you had and your skin type. Investing in proper aftercare truly helps you get the most value and the best results from your aesthetic treatment investment.

THe list:

  • #1: Minimize Inflammation
  • #2: Hydrate Deeply
  • #3: Restore the Skin Barrier Quickly
  • #4: Stimulate Repair
