Plasma skin treatment faqs Calgary

Plasma is the fourth state of matter — alongside solid, liquid, and gas — created when energy is applied to a gas, producing an energized field that delivers controlled heat to the skin. It’s the same phenomenon behind a lightning bolt, just refined to a microscopic, medical-grade scale. This is different from the “plasma” used in treatments like PRP or microneedling, which refers to a component of blood — the plasma used at Gia Sena is energy-based, not blood-derived. This energy powers two distinct treatments, each working at a different depth in the skin:

PLEXR PLUS

is a non-surgical plasma treatment performed at different intensities, ranging from advanced, targeted correction (e.g. eyelid laxity sublimation) to minimal-downtime skin-refresh treatments (e.g. Plexr Shower).

  • Firms & tightens appearance of loose or sagging skin (eyelids, lower eyes, neck, body)
  • Smooths fine lines & softens appearance of deeper wrinkles
  • Improves appearance of skin discoloration (pigmentation, sunspots)
  • Helps improve acne‑prone skin & appearance of scarring
  • Refines uneven skin tone & texture
  • Removes select benign skin lesions (e.g., skin tags, certain benign growths)

Learn more about PLEXR PLUS here.

NEOGEN PSR

is a plasma-based treatment designed to improve overall skin quality by stimulating collagen and supporting full-thickness skin regeneration.

  • Firms, lifts & tightens skin (full face, jawline & neck, abdomen, hands)
  • Stimulates collagen & elastin production
  • Improves skin tone & texture
  • Softens fine lines & deeper wrinkles
  • Strengthens thin or weakened skin tissue
  • Refines pore appearance
  • Supports improvement in acne & acne scarring

COMPARING PLEXR & NEOGEN

Both Plexr and NeoGen use plasma energy and can improve skin laxity, lines, wrinkles, and overall skin quality. The key difference is how and where they work within the skin.

Plexr (semi-ablative) is a targeted treatment that works on the outer layer of the skin (epidermis), creating small carbon crusts, which are a normal part of the healing process. It is often used for precise correction, such as eyelid tightening or localized skin concerns. Plexr also includes a non-ablative option — Plexr Shower, Rockstar Resurfacing, and Glass Lift — which uses the same plasma technology at a more superficial intensity, without crusting or downtime, better suited to lighter maintenance and early signs of aging.

NeoGen works across the full thickness of the skin, including deeper dermal layers, without breaking the surface. Instead of crusting, the skin typically appears red, similar to a sunburn, as it begins the regeneration process.

Summarized: Plexr is best for targeted surface correction, while NeoGen is designed for broader, deeper skin rejuvenation. Both are safe to use around the upper and lower eye area without the need for eye shields. Both Plexr and NeoGen also preserve the skin barrier while stimulating regeneration, which helps reduce risk and supports a smoother healing process.

Most aesthetic technologies deliver energy through a medium such as light (lasers/IPL) or electromagnetic waves (radiofrequency), heating the skin indirectly for skin rejuvenation and tightening, often targeting specific depths.

PLASMA ENERGY WORKS DIFFERENTLY

Plasma regeneration treatments deliver energy directly to the skin through controlled plasma arcs, allowing for precise, targeted skin treatments at the surface (Plexr) or controlled thermal energy delivered through the skin’s architecture (NeoGen PSR), affecting both surface and deeper dermal structures without surgery.

Because of this, plasma treatments are able to:

  • Target delicate areas with precision, including the upper and lower eyelids
  • Stimulate collagen and elastin production across multiple layers of the skin
  • Support both surface renewal and deeper structural regeneration
  • Work with the skin’s natural healing response rather than forcing change through heat alone
  • Create natural-looking outcomes by supporting the skin to rebuild and restore, rather than altering or adding to it

Plexr is typically used for targeted, surface-level correction, while NeoGen works more broadly through the full thickness of the skin, supporting deeper regeneration and overall skin quality.

Why this matters, especially in midlife skin

As skin matures, changes occur not just at the surface, but within the deeper structure of the skin itself. Treatments that only address one level often fall short of creating meaningful, lasting change.

NeoGen PSR, in particular, is recognized internationally for its effectiveness in supporting and strengthening menopausal skin, where deeper regenerative support becomes essential for maintaining skin structure, resilience, and function.

This is one of the reasons it has become a preferred approach for midlife skin, where true rejuvenation is less about correction and more about restoration and support.

At its core, plasma skin treatments are designed to work with the skin, supporting its ability to renew, rebuild, and restore over time.

BEFORE

Plexr and NeoGen plasma treatments begin with a consultation to review your skin concerns, goals, and treatment options. Pre-treatment guidelines will be provided (such as avoiding sun exposure and active skincare), and a treatment plan will be created based on your skin and desired outcome.

Prior to the procedure, consent is reviewed, questions are answered, and the skin is cleansed and prepped.

DURING

Controlled plasma energy is delivered to the skin’s surface. Treatment feels different depending on the device used.

With Plexr, you may feel sensations like a mild pin-prick or quick elastic snap against the skin. With NeoGen, the sensation is often described as a series of controlled, warm pulses. You will hear a snapping or clicking sound from the device.

Most clients find the procedures very tolerable.

AFTER

Post-care instructions will be provided to support optimal healing and results. This includes sun protection and simple aftercare guidance. Healing responses and downtime will vary depending on the treatment type and intensity used.

Right after treatment, the skin will look and feel different — and this is expected.

With Plexr, small carbon crusts form on the surface. These are protective and part of the healing process. Temporary redness, warmth, tightening, and swelling occur and are part of the normal response.

With NeoGen, the skin acts as a natural biological bandage, protecting the deeper regenerative work happening underneath. Temporary redness, warmth, tightening, and peeling occur and are part of the normal response.

👉 Healing is part of the process, your skin is actively working to renew and rebuild.

👉 Downtime and recovery is listed below (#7). Healing is part of the process, as your skin actively works to renew and rebuild.

Plexr and NeoGen are medical-grade plasma devices that are licensed and approved by Health Canada.

When performed by a trained and qualified provider, these treatments have a strong safety profile and are considered non-surgical and minimally invasive.

Both technologies have been used globally for many years, with consistent, well-documented results in skin rejuvenation and collagen remodeling.

Safety is always prioritized through proper assessment, treatment selection, and individualized protocols.

Yes. Both Plexr and NeoGen can be safely used on delicate areas, including the upper and lower eyelids.

They can be performed without the need for internal eye shields — something typically required with many laser treatments. This makes them a unique option for treating broad tissue laxity in the delicate eye‑area skin.

With Plexr treatments, change becomes noticeable once swelling has resolved and crusts have fallen away, with continued tightening and lift as the tissue remodels over the following weeks.

NeoGen is a longer-term, regenerative treatment. While the 30, 60, and 90 day framework gives a general shape to expect, most clients notice the clearest shift closer to the 90 day mark, with results continuing to build in the months that follow. Age plays a role here too. Skin in the 40s tends to show change a little earlier within that window, while skin in the 50s and beyond typically takes a bit longer, though it still begins within that three month mark and keeps progressing from there. Collagen formation can continue for up to 24 months.

While treatment initiates the process, the body’s ability to repair and rebuild is influenced by factors such as hydration, nutrition, sleep, sun protection, and a consistent skincare routine. Supporting these foundations helps optimize tissue renewal and long-term results, which typically can last several years. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to support or extend your results.

Typical downtime (recovery) depends on the treatment type and intensity. In general, most clients can expect:

PLEXR PLUS (non-ablative):

No downtime. Skin may appear slightly warm or refreshed immediately after treatment.

PLEXR PLUS (semi-ablative):

Temporary redness, warmth, tightness, swelling, and small carbon crusts (dots) on the skin surface. Downtime typically ranges from 7–10 days, depending on the treatment area.

NEOGEN PSR:

Temporary redness, warmth, tightening, and peeling similar to a deep sunburn. Downtime typically ranges from 5–10 days for lower-energy treatments to 7–10+ days for higher-energy treatments, as the skin regenerates.

For a full visual breakdown of healing day-to-day, visit the Recovery Process & Downtime Page.

For more information on the healing timeline and post-care, the Plexr & NeoGen Healing blog post walks through what to expect for each treatment.

Most clients report non-ablative treatments to be generally painless.

With semi-ablative Plexr, you may feel sensations like a mild pin-prick or quick elastic snap against the skin.

With NeoGen, the sensation is often described as a series of controlled, warm pulses. You will hear a snapping or clicking sound from the device.

Comfort measures are used to ensure you remain at ease throughout. Topical numbing may be used depending on the treatment and area. Overall the procedures are very well tolerated.

The number of sessions depends on your skin, your goals, and the type of treatment. For all treatments, results build progressively as collagen and elastin regenerate over time.

NON-ABLATIVE PLEXR (Shower, Rockstar, Glass Lift):

For optimal results, treatments are typically performed every 6–8 weeks. This is often referred to as a foundation series: a structured approach to building collagen and improving skin quality over time.

Typical ranges:

  • 30s – 3 sessions
  • 40s – 4 sessions
  • 50s- 5 sessions
Once your foundation is established, maintenance treatments are spaced out and customized to you.

SEMI-ABLATIVE PLEXR (Eyelid tightening, scars, static lines, Moles/Tags):

Some concerns can be addressed in a single session, while others may require multiple treatments spaced weeks to months apart. Initial results are visible as healing completes, with continued improvement as collagen reorganizes over the following weeks.

For upper eyelid laxity specifically — in practice, each treatment produces roughly a 30% reduction in visible laxity, so most clients plan for 1 to 3 sessions, with 2 being the most common path. Lower eye laxity is usually addressed in a single treatment, with an occasional touch-up if needed.

NEOGEN PSR:

NeoGen is a deeper regenerative treatment that works through the full thickness of the skin. Visible improvements develop gradually, typically beginning around 30 days, with continued improvement over 90–180 days as collagen continues to rebuild.

Depending on treatment intensity and individual skin response, results may last for several years, with some studies suggesting longevity of up to five years. Lower-energy treatments may be performed in a series, while higher-energy treatments are often done as a single treatment.

Your consultation will determine the most appropriate approach based on your skin and goals.

Plexr Plus options range from $295 to $900+ per area, and NeoGen ranges from approximately $750 to $2,900, depending on the area being treated,  the level of correction or regeneration desired, and number of sessions.

Because every treatment plan is customized, an accurate investment is provided during your consultation. At that time, we will assess your skin, discuss your goals, and outline a personalized plan with a detailed breakdown of costs.

Seasonal pricing and limited-time promotions are offered periodically throughout the year — current specials are best confirmed directly with the clinic. The treatment menu also continues to grow, with Rockstar Resurfacing, Glass Lift, and microneedling coming soon.

I am a Registered Nurse (BSN)  with over 23 years of clinical experience, with additional specialized training in advanced plasma technologies including Plexr and NeoGen. My approach is grounded in both clinical expertise and a deep understanding of skin regeneration.

Your safety is always the priority. Plasma treatments are highly effective, but they may not be suitable for everyone. During your consultation, we will review your medical history in detail to ensure the safest and most appropriate approach for your skin.

Certain conditions may prevent or delay treatment, including:

  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Current pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active cancer
  • An active infection in the treatment area
  • Electronic implants such as a pacemaker or ICD
  • A history of keloid or hypertrophic (raised) scarring
  • Vitiligo, as treatment can trigger new patches of depigmentation
  • Current use of Accutane (Isotretinoin), or have taken it within the last 6 months
  • Long-term use of topical steroids in the treatment area
  • Significant sun exposure, use of a tanning bed, or application of self-tanning products within the last 3 weeks
  • Certain auto-immune disorders that can impair healing, such as Lupus or Scleroderma
  • Any other serious health condition that might compromise your body’s ability to heal

If you’re unsure whether you’re a candidate, this is exactly what your consultation is for. Every treatment plan is personalized to ensure both safety and optimal results.

WHAT IS PLASMA?

Plasma is often referred to as the fourth state of matter (distinct from solid, liquid, or gas). In aesthetic treatments, devices like Plexr and NeoGen generate plasma energy by ionizing nitrogen  gas.

This energy is delivered as precise micro-arcs just above the skin’s surface, allowing treatment without direct contact.

Ultimately, Plexr is designed for precise, targeted correction at the skin’s surface, while NeoGen works across the full skin architecture, supporting deeper, more comprehensive regeneration. Both are safe to use around the upper and lower eye area without the need for eye shields.

PLEXR PLUS

Plexr plasma skin treatments work by creating controlled micro-sublimation (a rapid vaporization) at the surface of the skin. This results in small carbon crusts as part of the natural healing process.

This targeted approach causes immediate tissue contraction while stimulating collagen and elastin production over time.
Because Plexr works at the outer skin layer, it is ideal for precise correction, such as eyelid tightening or localized skin concerns, without cutting or surgical intervention.

A key advantage of Plexr is its precision. It focuses energy exactly where it is needed, minimizing thermal spread to surrounding tissue while activating the body’s natural regenerative response.

NEOGEN PSR

NeoGen PSR plasma skin treatments work by delivering controlled plasma energy through the skin’s full architecture, affecting both surface and deeper dermal structures at the same time, without breaking the skin. This allows it to address a range of concerns in one treatment, improving tone, texture, laxity, and overall skin quality in a more comprehensive way.

NeoGen treatments are often referred to by energy level, but true results come from both depth and coverage. Shot density — the number of precise plasma pulses delivered — plays an equally important role in how the skin responds and regenerates. Both are carefully considered in every treatment approach.

Rather than creating surface crusting, NeoGen typically results in temporary redness (similar to a sunburn), as the skin begins its regenerative process. This energy stimulates collagen and elastin production throughout the full thickness of the skin, supporting structural renewal while preserving the skin’s protective barrier.

NeoGen can be safely used on delicate areas, including the upper and lower eyelids, without the need for eye shields. Because of this multi-layer approach, NeoGen is often chosen for broader rejuvenation, treating not just isolated concerns, but the overall integrity and function of the skin.

Recognized internationally, NeoGen has been awarded for its effectiveness in supporting and strengthening menopausal skin, where deeper regenerative support becomes essential for maintaining skin structure, resilience, and function.

This is one of the reasons it has become a preferred treatment for midlife skin – where true rejuvenation is less about correction, and more about restoration and support.

PLEXR TREATMENT OPTIONS

A non-surgical alternative to traditional eyelid surgery that lifts and tightens excess skin on the upper and lower eyelids. Ideal for eyelid hooding, laxity, and crepey skin, often experienced as tired-looking under eyes. The result is firmer, brighter, more refined skin around the eyes.

• Targeted, semi-ablative treatment designed for precision correction
• Visible tightening with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue
• Approximately 7–10 days of social downtime as the skin heals

Most clients achieve their desired result in 1–3 sessions, depending on skin laxity and treatment goals. Pricing is $900 per area (upper or lower), with discounted pricing on additional sessions completed within 12 months. See “How Many Sessions Will I Need for Optimal Results?” for a full breakdown of what to expect for upper versus lower eye treatment.

Comfort is well-managed with topical numbing; most clients describe the treatment as very tolerable. Refinement develops both immediately and progressively, as the skin regenerates, strengthens, and reveals a more rested, lifted appearance over time.

An advanced, semi-ablative plasma treatment designed to address deeper static lines (such as 11’s and perioral lines), localized skin laxity, scarring, and select benign lesions.

This treatment can be performed with precision targeting for isolated concerns or across broader areas to refine skin texture, tone, and overall skin integrity. By delivering controlled plasma energy to the skin’s surface, it visibly softens wrinkle depth, improves firmness and elasticity, and supports long-term collagen remodeling.

For clients seeking alternatives to neuromodulators (e.g. Botox Dysport), this approach offers a structural solution for softening static lines, particularly in areas where lines remain visible at rest, by supporting the skin itself rather than temporarily relaxing muscle movement.

• Semi-ablative, corrective treatment
• Can be performed as targeted correction or area-based resurfacing
• Typically 60–90 minutes depending on treatment area
• Approximately 3–10 days of social downtime, depending on intensity and treatment approach

Pricing for targeted areas such as upper or lower lip lines, marionette lines, or ear lift starts at $500 per area. Scars, tags, and moles are individually assessed and start at $300.

Comfort is well-managed with topical numbing, and most clients describe the treatment as very tolerable.
Results develop both immediately and progressively as the skin regenerates and rebuilds strength and structure over time.

A non-ablative plasma treatment designed to refresh the skin, improve tone and texture, and stimulate collagen with no downtime. Ideal for early signs of laxity, dullness, or ongoing skin maintenance.

PLEXR SHOWER

Softens fine lines, minimizes pores, refines texture, supports collagen and elastin production and subtle tightening, and improves product absorption and skin clarity. Starts at $295.

Advanced treatments that build on Plexr Shower with the addition of targeted actives.

  • Rockstar Resurfacing incorporates biostimulants such as hyaluronic acid and amino acids to enhance hydration and collagen activity.
  • Glass Lift combines Plexr Shower with topical neuromodulators for a smoother, more refined finish.

Rockstar Resurfacing, Glass Lift, and microneedling are being added to the menu soon — check back or ask at your consultation for current availability and pricing.

NEOGEN TREATMENT OPTIONS

A plasma-based treatment designed to stimulate collagen and elastin production through the full thickness of the skin, supporting deeper structural regeneration over time. Unlike surface-focused treatments, NeoGen works across the skin’s architecture, making it particularly effective for overall skin quality, laxity, and midlife skin changes.

Because energy level and treatment area are highly individualized, Progressive and Structural Renewal represent starting frameworks rather than fixed settings — your specific protocol is determined during your consultation.

Treatment Levels

Structural Renewal (Higher Energy)

A more intensive treatment designed to initiate deeper tissue regeneration. Often recommended for clients with more advanced skin changes or those who have not previously undergone collagen-stimulating treatments.

Progressive Renewal (Lower Energy)

A progressive approach using a series of lower energy treatments to build collagen gradually over time. Ideal for maintaining skin quality or creating cumulative improvement with less intensity per session.

Results develop gradually over the weeks and months following treatment, reflecting the skin’s natural regenerative process. Treatment plans are often customized using a combination of higher and lower energy sessions to build and support long-term results.

Investment Structural Renewal starts at $950 for a targeted zone or $1,500 for the full face. Progressive Renewal starts at $750 for a targeted zone (such as acne or crow’s feet) or $1,100 for the full face. Neck or décolleté can be added from $300, or treated as a standalone area starting at $850. Series and package pricing is also available, with total investment typically between $1,500 and $2,900 depending on the protocol selected.
